Njord is one of the three Vanir who came to live in Asgard after the warring gods laid down their arms. The other two are his children Freyr and Freyja, who he had with his first wife, Njärd. She was also his sister, since marriage between siblings was practised between the Vanir, a tradition they had to abandon when they came to Asgard.
Like all Vanir, Njord is a god of abundance, with power over trade and wealth. As the master of ships and seafarers, he controls the wind and the waves. Fishermen invoke him for a plentiful catch, and seafarers for good wind in their sails. He lives in heaven, in the hall of Noatun.
His name means power or strength.
