Vârcolaci (singular vârcolac) are remarkable beasts believed to combine aspects of both vampires and werewolves. Like Sköll and Hati in Nordic mythology, they are wolf monsters that cause lunar eclipses by leaping into the sky and devouring the moon. Sometimes they can even attack the sun. They appear as wolves or dogs, often in pairs. A vârcolac might also take on human form, but can be recognised by its pale skin, which is as dry as tinder.
The illustration is from the book The Undead.
