Odin is one of the wisest beings in the nine worlds, and he is driven by a ravenous thirst for knowledge. Not only does he have knowledge about the present and the past, but with the help of spells and runes he can also see into the future.
He has learnt the art of sorcery from the Vanir goddess Freyja, and to discover the mystery of the runes he gave himself up as a sacrifice to himself. He did this by hanging from one of Yggdrasil’s branches for nine nights, pierced by a spear.
If Odin can’t see into the future himself, he doesn’t hesitate to call up the dead and ask them. Because the dead experience time differently – for them the present, the past and the future flow into one. A suitable place to ask the dead is at the gallows, and that is why Odin is often called the ‘Gallows God’.
