Saint George, or George of Lydda, is arguably the most popular dragon slayer of all time. He has become the archetypal image of the noble knight on a white steed, rescuing damsels from ending up as dragon-lunch, and defeating evil in its most gruesome reptile form. Saint George is the patron saint of a plethora of nations, including England, Portugal, Catalonia, Lithuania, Serbia, Montenegro, Ethiopia and Georgia (which is thought to be named after him).
The illustration is from the book Dragons.
