The most common Japanese dragon, tatsu, is very similar in appearance to the Chinese dragon, but is even more snake-like. Its back is lined with a spiky crest, its jaws are fringed with a scraggly beard and its paws invariably have three claws. There is something wild in their eyes, for they have a very different temperament from their mainland cousins. If Chinese dragons instill awe, in Japan that awe is laced with more than a hint of terror. Sure, they can be benevolent bringers of good fortune, but they also play the role of malicious monsters that must be defeated.

The illustration is from the book Dragons.

The art print is in A3 format (29,7 x 42 cm / 11.7 x 16.5") and is printed on fine art paper, Munken Pure 300 gsm. The print is signed by the artist. Click the image to see the layout of the print, the print does not fill up the whole sheet of paper.
